Debitos Appointed Again to the European Commission’s NPL Panel
The reappointment of Debitos to the European Commission’s NPL Panel is not only a recognition of the company’s current market position, but also the consistent continuation of a long-standing commitment at the European level in the field of non-performing loans (NPLs).
As early as 2017, Debitos played a key role in initiating the formation of today’s NPL Panel. At that time, Debitos provided the ECOFIN Working Group with a structured overview of its secondary market activities in the NPL segment. This practice-oriented market insight formed an important basis for the subsequent political and regulatory discussions on the development of a European secondary market for non-performing loans.
On 10 July 2017, the European Commission launched a public consultation entitled “Development of secondary markets for non-performing loans and distressed assets and protection of secured creditors from borrowers’ default”. Debitos actively supported this process and contributed its operational market expertise to the discussion.
This was followed by a series of in-depth discussions and working meetings with the European Commission, the European Central Bank (ECB), and the European Banking Authority (EBA). During this phase, the institutions intensively explored whether and in what form a pan-European NPL transaction platform could be established. From the outset, Debitos was closely involved in these considerations as a practical market participant.
A key milestone in this development was the first European conference dedicated to this topic, held on 22 May 2018 in Brussels, in which Debitos also participated as an active contributor. Numerous further consultations and working formats with the relevant European institutions followed in the years thereafter.
Against this background, Debitos has been part of the European Commission’s NPL Panel since its inception and was also the first NPL transaction platform ever to be admitted to this body—a role that Debitos continues to hold to this day.
As by far the leading NPL transaction platform in Europe, Debitos combines a unique mix of technological infrastructure, market data, transaction expertise, and a pan-European network of banks, investors, servicers, and institutional market participants. This expertise continues to be actively contributed to the work of the NPL Panel.
With the formal reappointment of Debitos, the European Commission underscores the importance of market-driven, digital solutions for the sustainable development of an efficient, transparent, and integrated European NPL secondary market. Debitos views its participation in the NPL Panel as a long-term responsibility and as an active contribution to the stability and further development of the European financial system.
